Creating art is my own form of sensory shutdown - a way to dismantle the mask and reconnect with those inner worlds. Through my reconnect with those inner worlds - through my work - I invite others to see beyond facades, to explore the spaces where we hide, imagine, and ultimately find freedom. It’s a reminder of beauty in both the visible and hidden parts of ourselves.
About the Artist
Zali Chapman is a 20-year-old artist based in the Sunshine Coast who has been exploring and creating art from a young age. For Zali, art has always been more than just a hobby; it’s a vital means of communication, especially when words fall short. They often feel that what seems clear in their mind is difficult to express verbally, but art bridges that gap. They have always incorporated art into their life, from making children's books for school projects to filling the blank spaces of their booklets and exams with doodles.
Zali completed a Certificate III in Screen and Media in 2021 and a Certificate III in Visual Arts in 2023. They enjoy experimenting with various mediums, including digital art, painting, film, sculpture, photography, drawing, and music.
Their digital art journey began at age 10, using MSPaint on the family computer. Over time, Zali has upgraded both their equipment and skills. Influenced by a childhood filled with animation, picture books, comics, graphic novels, and visits to art galleries, Zali draws inspiration from both historical and contemporary sources.
