Roy Alfred Close: Three Years In The Making NAIDOC Mini Exhibition

This solo exhibition of First Nations Artist: Roy Alfred Close Three Years in the Making

Roy Close is Quandmooka, Butchulla, Jirrbal and South Sea Islander artist living and working on Jagera land. At the age of 17 he began to paint, inspired by the abstract art and Aboriginal art he was introduced to by friends and family.

Roy says:

“Art gives me something to do, my art relaxes me. I give to people through my artwork.”

Roy translates his ideas about the world around him into art, with the concept of connectedness driving his compositions. Roy’s use of colour, composition and pattern depict his ‘voice’, the strength of his culture and artistic practice.

This project seeks to foster education and understanding of First Nations’ communities by representing an artist who experience barriers to exhibiting their art commercially.

Around 45% of First Nations people live with disability. Artists with this intersection of identities, possess the ability to communicate vital perspectives through their art. This exhibition is a step towards changing the status quo and educating, encouraging and engaging the FKG community in meaningful conversations about reconciliation.

This is the second year of this exhibition hosted by FKG with First nations artists working with Art From The Margins.
