About Roy Close
Roy is a Turrbal, Butchulla, Jirrbal and South Sea Islander artist living and working on Jagera land. At the age of 15, he began to paint, inspired by the abstract art and aboriginal art he was introduced to by a school Aboriginal Art program.
He says:
“Art give me something to do, my art relaxes me.
I like to tell stories through my paintings. I give to people through my artwork.”
Roy translates his ideas about the world around him into art, with the concept of connectedness driving his compositions.
The multicoloured segments that often make up Roy’s work represent many things. Sometimes, he says, ‘they are all suburbs of Brisbane, or all the Aboriginal tribes’ like a map. Sometimes they are the days of the year, all coming together in one place as one ongoing memory.
