Katka Adams
Golden Chain
2019
Pastel and pencil on paper
83.5 x 120 cm
Olive, now aged five, is the first of Katka’s two grandchildren. In this work, Olive, held by Katka, clutches a golden chain that had belonged to Olive’s great-great-grandmother, Maria, in Prague. It was a gift to Katka as she and her mother were leaving then-Czechoslovakia for Australia in 1969 in the aftermath of the Soviet suppression of the country’s democracy movement. Katka remembers her grandmother treasuring the engraved medallion, a guardian angel, dating back to her own childhood.
The chain symbolizes the family line and traditions continuing uninterrupted through generations.
