Brooke Mott - about us/without us
poem on pianola roll,
1300 x 30cm
$120
they speak of us as cases
assign us to substandard spaces
ignorant of our humanity
just faceless
applauded and cheered
as our rights disappear
what will become of us
so cruel but complacent
This artwork corresponds with the original song You Don’t Look Sick and artwork Second Class Citizen
About the artist
Brooke is a passionate artist, writer and disability advocate who lives with a complex disability and is neurodivergent. Brooke's skills come to life through their creative practice, which powerfully symbolizes the impact of creativity in advocacy. Fueled by a deep passion for music, Brooke's art is inspired by their distinctive experience with sound. The expressive mark-making channels their synesthesia, while the use of texture embodies the joy of a sensory-driven approach to art.
*Songs written in collaboration with Kassie Sofia at Rhythm Music Therapy, using a process I would describe as adaptive songwriting. We utilized a range of visual tools and breaking down of music into parts, to adapt the process to suit my neurodivergent/synesthete brain.
