Inspired by Alex the Astronaut – Octopus.

In music, there’s a special word for the way notes connect to each other: articulation. When we hear short, separated musical sounds, we call that kind of articulation staccato. As autistic people, we often communicate in a short, detached and jumpy style, just like the representation of the notes in this Synaesthesia painting. And this style of communication is perfect- just the way it is.

Brooke Mott

“It has been through becoming physically disabled that I have allowed myself to accept my differences”.

Life with MS, a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder and their experience of Synaesthesia has drastically shaped Brooke’s artistic expression. Rather than crumble under the pressure, Brooke is clearer about their painting direction than ever before.

Emerging out of only recently discovering that not everyone sees colours, shapes and texture when they listen to music; is a series of paintings that are direct translations of some of Brooke’s favourite music. The paintbrushes become the instrument as they play along with the song and the mark making feels like picking a guitar string. The work uses texture to evoke the senses and allow the viewer to feel the music with their fingertips.

Brooke has a background in graphic design, photography and business and combines these skills to create artwork that symbolises the power of music and painting to sooth the soul.
