Ceramics

NFS

Earlier this year, I was facing homelessness. I was reflecting on the idea of home as part of my Journal Sphere series, where I have been making a sphere every month in ceramics at AFTM, documenting an aspect of my experience or just experimenting with a ceramics technique. When I began making this sphere, I had no idea where I would be living after July. After I began decorating it, I found secure and affordable accomodation, which meant I was able to incorporate some aspects of my new home into my initial design, including a nod to the long red steps of Jacob’s Ladder from the city to Spring Hill.

About the Artist

Kirsty Leishman borrowed a book on drawing from the library after she participated in an arts therapy group, wanting to acquire more skills to adequately express herself.  Since that time she has embraced opportunities to partake in creative communities and practices, discovering an affinity for coiled raffia weaving, ceramics, and block printing. Her work often brings these media together in contemplations on the details of the natural environment. She holds an M.Phil in Cultural Studies.
