The model for this portrait (Mikayla) is someone I’ve known for more than a year now. This was my first time painting her and I captured a softness that I see in her. Of course, as people we have depth, we’re not one-dimensional, so I look forward to perhaps painting her again, and bringing out more of that depth.
About Majeeda Cox:
"Since I returned to art in 1997 I have drawn and painted people, and most often faces. A woman’s face was the very first thing I drew, using pastels when I “tried out” art as an adult.
Whether it’s a portrait of someone specific or a fictional person, or a blend of both, there is a lot to explore in the face and, for that reason, I don’t know that painting them could ever get dull. Whether because of autism (Aspergers) or simply because I am human, I think my focus leads me to a deeper understanding of people".
